The domesticated saffron crocus, Crocus sativus, is an autumn-flowering perennial plant unknown in the wild. It probably descends from the eastern Mediterranean autumn-flowering Crocus cartwrightianus, which is also known as “wild saffron” and originated in Crete or mainland Greece. It is known as one of the most valuable and expensive spices in the world.
These days, Saffron has been cultivated in Iran, Spain, Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asia, and actually, Iran is the first saffron producer in the world. 
Saffron is mostly used as powder for cooking and hot drinks. The flower of saffron usually grows in the fall, and it could be found in sizes from 25 to 30 millimeters. 
This plant is rich in vitamin A, folic acid, copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium, riboflavin and thiamine.
